POETIC PLAY

WRITING DEVOTION
A monthly retreat series with Dawn Thompson
Dates: 4 Mondays ~ September 9th, October 14th, November 4th & December 9thTime: 10:00am-12:30pmCost: $160Location: Kitty's home, NE Portland
"...Poetry gives us an opportunity to experience our lives twice. First, as it happens, in real time. And second, in heart time...It also gives us a way to travel profoundly into experiences that are not our own and, if we are lucky, alight on a moment of truth about the human condition..." - Sage Cohen
The poem gifts us the opportunity to savor a moment, make sense of our experience. It also allows us to step into someone else's shoes. What's more, that someone might be a tree or a raging river. The poem invites us to think metaphorically as well as literally. It encourages us to make music and to paint pictures with our words. Because poems insist that the mind and heart dance together, poetry can also open a door to peace. In the poem, we honor the wide terrain of the human condition, the whimsical, the terrible, the profane and the sacred.
Practicing the art of compression, of sculpting words in new ways to get to the heart and bones of a story, strengthens all of our writing. In this workshop, we'll have the opportunity to play and experiment with the basic ingredients of poetry. We'll also read the work of a variety of poets as doorways into our own writing. While we will honor the poem in this workshop, any and all forms of writing are encouraged.
No previous poetry experience necessary.

Join us as we welcome this autumn season by gathering together at Alton Collins Retreat Center set deep in the old growth forests of Oregon. We will have the chance to awaken our creative spark through the writing and art process as we tend to ourselves in a circle of care and compassion. Drawing inspiration from the natural world and its infinite wisdom of design, we will explore how the signs of early fall move through us, rooting in our inner strength as we transition into the shorter days of the year. Utilizing painting, drawing, collage, fiber arts, and printmaking with natural materials from the magnificent forest, you’ll have the chance to honor your own process of becoming during this harvest time. This soulful and inspiring weekend offers you a chance to deeply nourish yourself with delicious meals, a beautiful natural retreat setting, and the supportive, uplifting company of other women.
